As someone who’s never been a big fan of working for someone else, I’m SO pumped to bring you yet another incredible story from a student in my group coaching program, Breakthrough for Bookkeepers & Accountants. Lakesha started her business after getting laid off from her full-time job, got another job to fund her business adventure, and just recently quit that one to go ALL IN on her business!

She admits that she couldn’t have taken the leap without the help of Breakthorugh’s content and community, which is exactly what I like to hear!!! If you’ve been thinking about joining us in our game-changing group program, Lakesha’s story might be just what you need to help you make the decision to go for it. I truly admire what she’s been able to accomplish in her business while working in a 9-5.

In this blog and podcast, we’ll discover:

  • Navigating the mindset shift from employee to CEO

  • Getting your first hire set up for success

  • Using KPIs to improve your systems

  • How the right tech stack is a game changer for your business

Lakesha is an AMAZING example of how putting in the work (or training someone else to do it) can really take your firm to the next level!

Taking the Leap From Employee to CEO

If you got laid off, would it motivate you to do everything in your power to make sure you NEVER had to rely on someone else to provide you with an income? Approve your PTO? Decide what kind of health insurance you get to have?

Lakesha found herself without a job during the pandemic, and it inspired her to start her own bookkeeping business using the 20 years of corporate accounting she had under her belt. For security, she decided to go out and get another full time job alongside building her business (which she just recently quit to go full time in her own biz!).

All the energy she spent building her β€œside hustle” totally paid off,  because now she’s able to spend only about 5 hours per week on client work, with her current client roster of 11.

But she couldn’t have done it as quickly without the help of Kickoff with Asana for Bookkeepers & Accountants (our signature self-paced program) and Breakthrough for Bookkeepers & Accountants (our group coaching program)! And she was able to hire her first VA to support her with the day-to-day tasks to give herself even MORE time to work ON the business instead of IN it.

What I see so often with our students who come from a β€œregular” job or corporate background is that they’re stuck in the employee mindset, which is something Lakesha struggled with at first, too. It can be SO tough to make that transition, especially when you aren’t used to having control over literally everything you do!

The Breakthrough Difference

Before joining our group coaching program, Lakesha wasn’t sure how to run her business so that she could hire, scale, stay profitable, streamline, and all the things without getting totally consumed and overwhelmed. She shared with us the specific aspects of the Breakthrough program that make her reach her goals and succeed!

  1. The Community

  2. The Coaching Calls

  3. Leveraging KPIs

  4. Perfect Tech Stack

And this is just scratching the surface! But each one serves a purpose that was carefully added to make sure our students have access to the tools and resources that’ll truly help them.

The Breakthrough Community

When I say our student community is LIT, I mean it! What’s awesome about it is that you can come in with a question, no matter how niche, and someone will probably have a golden nugget to share with you. I'll even find out cool things from our Facebook community that gives me AHA moments!

The Coaching Calls

Yet another incredible place to get AHA moments and juicy takeaways that only make the program sooo much more valuable. Lakesha mentions that she’s only missed one coaching call, and catches the replay or rewatches some later to get even more goodness out of them!

Leveraging KPIs + Tech

I’ve been obsessed with KPIs and the power they have growing a business β€” but only if you actually USE the data! We teach Breakthrough-ers how to collect data, create benchmarks for their business, and analyze the results to find ways to improve their systems. It’s not as complicated as it sounds, promise!

The Perfect Tech Stack

Lakesha loved implementing a tech stack that wasn’t full of extras she’d never use. Which is exactly why I created a full list of the tech I recommend and use in my own firm, Magnetic Bookkeeping & Consulting! Here’s what Lakesha loves to use now that she’s been able to implement all the goodness with the help of her VA:

  • Notion: The brain of the company that holds information about anything and everything your business needs to function. This is NOT the project management system, but a centralized hub for internal operations. Lakesha mentioned that using Notion (and having her VA set it up for her) totally transformed the way she operates her business for the better! And yes, we give you a whole template for this so you’re not just starting from scratch!!!

  • Clockify: Time tracking is one of the most important parts of running a business and collecting data that helps you improve systems, hire team members, and make profits. If you aren’t already tracking your time, I highly recommend you start! Time tracking data can also help you create those benchmarks you need to identify where you can be more efficient in your business, and even which role you need to hire first!

  • Content Snare: Collect documents and information from clients with ease and wayyy less headache than ever before by setting up this software and adding it to your client work process each month.

  • Asana: Obviously we couldn’t leave out this incredible piece of tech that acts as the backbone of the company and always answers the question, β€œWhat’s everyone working on?”. Asana is the perfect task management system for bookkeepers, but only if it's set up for success!

  • Zapier: Connects tons of software together to make sure you’re not doing any manual work that could be automated instead! Zaps can save soooo much time when used correctly so that you can spend your energy on things that need your genius.

  • Loom: Record yourself or your screen to capture how-to videos and create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for your team members or as a reminder for yourself!

Is Breakthrough Right For You?

Lakesha says that if you’re on the fence about joining us in Breakthrough, that’s okay! I actually told her I thought she should wait to join us until she was ready to go full-force in her business, but she ignored me and did it anyway β€” and I’m glad she did!

If you know you have the drive to put in the energy and time you’ll need to adopt the concepts we teach and put them into practice, Breakthrough for Bookkeepers & Accountants was created for you! It’s a 6 month group coaching program that’s based on concepts that you can tailor to your unique needs. And we’ll even support you in deciding which section you should start in based on where you’re at in business right now!

Come join us in Breakthrough today!
