You might be tempted to assume that I know all the things about managing finances and making smart money moves. But I know where my zone of genius is, and what falls outside of the lines.

For example, I know that I’m kickass at bookkeeping and consulting for creative business owners. So in my firm, I use my skills and knowledge to support our clients and help them do things they didn’t even know were possible in their business. But there’s a limit to what I know about financial management — which is when I turn to someone who specialized in the next level when the time is right.

For me, the trusted financial advisor I love to have in my corner is Blake Morlet of Invicta Financial Group. At the time of this recording, I’ve been working with him for a year to help me make smarter financial decisions in my personal and business life. I had him on the podcast to share about why “numbers people” need their own “numbers people”!

Why Do You Need a Financial Advisor?

A lot of people wonder why they’d need a financial advisor in the first place — especially if you’re already amazing at understanding how to manage your finances, build a sustainable business, and you have a tax preparer by your side. But the reality is, those things are only half of the equation!

Because once you hit a certain level of growth in your business (aka you girl-bossed too hard and now your side hustle is exploding into a full-time thing), you need to start making plans for how to remove yourself from your business without it falling apart.

We have an entire module on this in Breakthrough for Bookkeepers & Accountants, which helps you plan for how your business will run in case you need/want to take a leave of absence. But financially planning for this type of situation is super important, too.

Working with a financial advisor like Blake can help you answer questions like:

“What should I do with all this money I’m bringing in?”

“How can I start offering my team members benefits and retirement plans?”

“What happens to my business if I’m not around anymore?”

“How can I set goals that align with my values, and how do I reach them?”

I honestly didn’t even realize the wide range of support I would get from working with Blake. When I decided that I wanted to officially buy my first house, they connected me with a real estate agent and someone to help me with my credit score!

What’s the Difference Between a Financial Advisor and Other Money Pros?

The main thing that sets a financial advisor apart from CPAs, EAs, bookkeepers, and specialized consultants is that they can support you in all aspects of your financial health, including investment. Some of them can help you with both your personal and business finances, and should be considered an extension of your team.

Blake says he wants to make sure he’s putting all the right people at the table for you. So if that means connecting you with a new tax preparer, understanding your home buying options, educating you on retirement planning, or whatever that looks like — he’s there to make you feel empowered to make the right decision for YOU.

How to Get Started With A Financial Advisor

More than likely, you’ll experience a certain shift in your business that indicates you’re ready to start working with a financial advisor. No, you don’t have to be hitting 7 figures in your business before someone will agree to meet with you. There are ways they can support business owners at all levels — you just have to find the one that works best for you.

I love how Blake shared that his main goal when working with someone is optimize their business to fit their life, goals, and values. It’s totally okay for your goals to change as your business grows, life happens, and you reach new levels of success. Having a plan in place is the BEST way to make sure those goals are met and actually align with your values (so they feel extra rewarding when you reach them)!

How to Connect With The Right Financial Advisor

In any industry, there are amazing people out there who show up for their clients and kick ass at what they do. And then there are some who… don’t.

And just because someone’s a good advisor, doesn’t mean they’ll be the best fit for you. So don’t be scared to interview them, ask questions, and meet with several before choosing one that’s really going to support you and act in your best interest.

In the end, it’s SO important to understand that financial planning for yourself and your business is ultimately going to give you more of your time back. It’s so similar to what we do for people as bookkeepers and accountants! We serve clients using our zone of genius so they don’t have to feel overwhelmed by the parts of their business they don’t want to or know how to manage.

So if thinking about managing your finances beyond the books and taxes feels intimidating, just know that there’s a solution! You can connect with incredible people who specialize in whatever you need to help create a plan for the future of your business.

It’s not always fun to think about, but knowing what’s going to happen in case of emergency is super important for making sure all of your hard work and wealth doesn’t disappear. Working with the right partner can make all of this a breeze, you just have to take the first step!

I HIGHLY recommend scheduling a chat with Blake to explore your options and understand how you’ll specifically benefit from working with a financial advisor. It’s never too early to start asking questions and educating yourself about all the ways you can prep and protect your assets for the future.
